The
Skinny on the Surfers 2005:
Phil
Steele: 85th nationally/3rd WAC
Sporting News: 75th nation/4th WAC
Schedule Strength: 73rd
Coach: June Jones (48-30, 6years)
Series: MSU leads 3-1-0
Website: www.uhathletics.hawaii.edu
Factoids: Hawaii paid off the WAC conference commissioner
and the officials to throw the season ending game vs the Spartans with
the worst officiated game in NCAA history. June Jones ran the Run-and-Shoot
under Wayne Fontes for the Detroit Lions....
Best Player: WR Jason Rivers caught 80 passes last year,
and had five for 46 yards against the Spartans last year.
Best 2004 win: The 41-38 victory over MSU. It was a sham,
and they actually won.
Worst 2004 loss: You pick: either the 69-3 loss at Boise
(which the ES watched on national tv), or losing 70-14 at Fresno.
2005
season clincher: The season finale December 3 vs San Diego State
will make or break their bowl hopes.
2005 biggest pitfall: The
ES will have to pick Hawaii's home opener against national champ Southern
Cal, but there are some other toughies as well.
2005 biggest creampuff(s): Nov. 12 home vs Utah State.
The Cheaters should win in a cake walk.
Biggest weakness: QB. Gone is all-time NCAA passing leader
and interception leader Tommy Chang, and in comes eithr senior Kainoa
Akina or Jeff Rhode. Starting Akina -- a transfer from E. Michigan who
has played in only seven games in four years -- or, Rhode -- who wasn't
even invited to the club last year but ended up practicing with the first
unit by season's end -- and expect them to command the run-and-shoot spells
trouble.
Biggest strength(s): Hawaii's wide receivers are small,
speedy, sure handed, and fast... just like June Jones likes.
Chance
to win: Rating scale -
MSU will remember
being robbed in the season finale last year. They want blood, and hopefully
they will be able to pour it on and just kick Hawaii's ass. After the
first game, they should improve immensely and should be able to use the
improvement to bludgeon the Cheating Surfers. MSU's defense will gamble
and likely allow a few long pass plays to the run-and-shoot, as they did
last year; but don't expect Akina/Rhode to be as efficient as Chang. Hawaii
has one of the best O-lines in theWAC, but after adjustments from the
first game, MSU's front should be able to pressure Hawaii QBs enough to
force some INTs. I won't call it a done deal, but the Spartans will be
able to control this game at home.
Projection: The pundits may be putting Hawaii in favorable
light, but the ES doesn't see it so bright. Hawaii has a brutal schedule
-- opening at home vs national champ Southern Cal, at MSU, home vs Boise
State, home vs Fresno State, at La Tech, and home vs. Wisconsin. I'm picking
Hawaii to lose 5 of those 6 games. They'll head into their season finale
vs SDSU at 5-5, with a win clinching a bowl at 6-5.
