1979 Tayana
42 "Destiny", hull # TVA4E006879, USCG documented vessel #620257.

Mike
traded in NOLHI for DESTINY to fulfill his blue water sailing dream. NOLHI
was the 27 footer sold in spring 2006. Mike purchased DESTINY, a 42 footer,
in March 2007, and is continuing repairs as he sails this beauty around
the North American continent.
Here is the
initial review of the boat:
It was
good to speak with you on the phone this morning. I look forward to working
with you.
I will arrive in FL late Sunday, February 18, and staying with friends
about two hours away. I will view the boat for the first time on February
19. At that time I will decide whether to proceed with the survey. I'll
advise you by phone (what is your cell number) as soon as possible. I
will contact the broker and confirm the time of day that the boat will
be available and unlocked on Tuesday, February 20, for your survey to
commence. I'll try to setup a launching of approximately 11:00 AM for
the sea-trial that day as well. I have reservations to fly back to Seattle
on Thursday (22) morning.
Aside from what is on the Yachtworld web site, what follows is what I
have learned about the boat from the St Augustine Yacht Sales broker (Doug
Crane-904-0669-3068 cell, 904-829-1589 office), surveyor John Marples
(904-347-1407 cell) whom I hired in September to do a one hour's viewing
to determine if the boat was worth an offer, and the St. Augustine Marine
boatyard (Shawn 904-824-4394). I provide this information to give you
a leg-up on the survey but would expect you to use your own observations
to confirm or recant as appropriate.
As I said, due to all the costs involved in trucking the boat to Puget
Sound I am seriously considering ferrying it back conservatively (St Augustine-Key
West-Panama-Hawaii-Seattle). My initial planning finds this option (voyage)
in the recommended seasonal timeframe. Please keep this forefront in your
mind during the survey as far as necessary "seaworthy, non-aesthetic"
items are concerned. In any case, boat is being purchased for deep Pacific
cruising and possible circumnavigation. Your best-guess estimates for
these items would be greatly appreciated. I will make my decision to purchase
and either truck or sail after the completion of your survey/sea-trial
and a summary discussion of your recommendations.
Boat has been on the hard since 8/11/04 (Shawn) after the new engine was
installed, launched to check for leaks, and then hauled back onto the
hard. Boatyard has maintenance history going back to 2000. There has also
been some rewiring; bilge was specifically mentioned.
Broker says:
Macauley has been owner since late 80s. Boat needs TLC. Boat was flooded
to the sole with FRESH water during a tank filling, specifics of the incident
unclear, but there is no damage to the sole; new engine was installed
sometime after that incident. Broker says Volvo (Jacksonville) will still
warrantee (2 year) the engine as it is still within the three year period
since installation...they won't after that date. Deck is fiberglass and
FACTORY original. Some electronics and others are also new (see ad). All
tanks have good service ports.
